Artist Statement Home Land is an extension of my “Family Story” series started from 2002. This exhibition is an interim conclusion for the “Family Story” series. The “unhusked rice” and “stack” in this solo exhibition are symbolic objects of my mother and father. By using different materials and techniques repeatedly, I ery to free the objects from their “agricultural” nature, and transform them into a more complicated, polysemous, mundane and analogous contents. Moreover, employing elements adapted from farmers’ everyday life and rituals, the different sensibilities of “in remembrance of Mother” and “gratitude to the land” are combined, and “the disappearance/circulation of time” and “the death/regeneration of Creation” are merged together. Home Land is a continuation of my practice on interdisciplinary arts by integrating image, performance, painting and installation to present a single subject. From the formal point of view, it presents contemporary arts by transforming the narrative way of literature, the metaphors in traditional calligraphy and painting, and the abstraction of traditional performance, and by merging farmers’ handicraft techniques and the breath from the land at the same time. In other words, I started my creation from “literary aesthetic” and “personal agrarian experience”; and through the completion and unending reinterpretation of my work, I tried my best to show a specific dimension of Taiwan contemporary arts.
