About the Artist
Andreea Medar
Andreea Medar (b. 1990) is a Romanian artist based in Târgu Jiu and Timișoara. She holds a Ph.D. in Painting from the Faculty of Arts and Design in Timișoara, later expanding her practice to include sculpture, installation, and video art. Medar’s work juxtaposes past and present, blending traditional crafts with contemporary materials to reinterpret personal experiences and explore social issues. Born in post-communist Romania during the economically volatile 1990s, she grew up in Racoți Village, a town seemingly frozen in time, contrasting sharply with the urban landscape of Târgu Jiu. The rapid transformation of the village—from the decline of traditional handicrafts to depopulation and abandoned homes—profoundly influences her artistic inquiry. Since 2017, Medar has collaborated with artist and curator Mălina Ionescu, and in 2021, she was awarded the Romanian Young Artist Prize. Her works are part of the collections at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Romania (MNAC) and the Timișoara Art Museum.
