Manifestation of Homunculi Mysterious, ancient alchemy and the precise neurosurgery of today are two disciplines that seem to stand in contradiction with each other, yet they invariably share the same imagery of Homunculi. While this reveals mankind’s continuous pursuit of self-development, it also enshrines Jung’s concept of the Individuation Process as humanity enters a new century. Undoubtedly, it remains a significant proposition that cannot be ignored. Jung’s notion of individuation alludes to
an integral process to mankind’s development” and clearly declares that people will experience revolutions in many aspects throughout their lives. To achieve a universe that transcends the individual is similar to attaining a
harmony between heaven and mankind,” a notion often preached in Eastern philosophies, while imagination is seen as an important means that leads to such a realm. Extrapolating across this line of reasoning, artists that are sensitive and mindful must overcome a struggle that occurs between their senses and inner consciousness. Only by doing so can they manifest their inspiration as artworks. In terms of its meaning, this form of art creation is in accordance with the becoming of a homunculus. Seeking change through art, an artist is like an alchemist who experiments through trial and error. Exploring different elements and proportions, they create many failed or semi-finished products until they arrive at a final product (in a sense. a final one is never achieved). From this perspective, the artist is like a neurologist, studying brain with particular technique that is unknown to themselves. And they are also like an alchemist, forging materials with their own souls. The creation of different artistic styles that menifests themselves, and stands as testimony to their lives. It is like a common goal or a procession of strong implications that exhibit a firm stance. Therefore, for this large-scale parade, Manifestation of Homunculi, we shall present the artwork in an order that follows the six alchemical procedures: Calcination and Dissolution, Decomposition and Combination, Fermentation and Distillation, Condensation and Digestion, Sublimation and Waxing, and Proliferation and Projection. At the same time, many artist groups hailing from different spatial and temporal backgrounds will present documents and notes they used during their creative process. From this, one can witness each artist’s endless exploration of life and the universe, as well as their creations, marks of perseverance, and unremitting attitudes amidst a series of ordeals.
