Sound Box- Tsai Kuen-Lin solo exhibition
2011.07.01~2011.08.07
09:00 - 17:00
I first developed a curiosity towards PVC pipes in 2008, as they make interesting creative mediums for installations. So I started to experiment with what I can do with the pipes outside of its architectural and civil engineering purposes and in the same year, had a solo exhibition at HanHai Gallery. Since then, I have explored further the impact I can create in an installation if the medium contains both audio and visual elements. I discovered the ways sound can be reproduced as the pipes are twisted in various ways, imagining the changes a sound goes through as it wriggles its way through the cavity of the pipes, the interconnecting joints, with other sounds from other pipes. The installation then contains more than its external component. Within the pipes are internal spaces and sound is being created and altered dynamically all the time. To the audience, the way sounds are being altered, how they differ from real time noises, or with pre-recorded audio played over electric devices, or through open or close ended conduits - are fascinating in the way they have been altered from its original state. To date, my objective is to do more research into the medium so that I can create more dimensions in my installations with PVC pipes.
