370 New World - Solo Exhibition of Marcantonio Lunardi

09:00 - 17:00
Venue | Gallery 102 Artistic statement | My filmic training took place entirely in the field of auteur documentary. This meant that my language was indelibly marked by the technique and expressive form of the documentary. This component is very important for everything I have done so far, because it has not only influenced the way I express myself but also my way of seeing the world. I do not try to alter reality, modeling it on my inner world: instead my inner world constantly integrates elements of reality and it processes them up to their ultimate consequences. This may seem strange because all my films contain a strong surrealism: the seeding on the concrete, the monitors instead of the heads and the totem of televisions. Nevertheless this imaginary originates from real data and from a strictly documentary approach to the society and the time in which I live. In 2011 I felt the need to reshape my means of expression and for this I went from documentary filmmaking to the video art without changing my approach to the real. The political problems in my country and the social difficulties in Europe were very large, they caused me discomfort and sadness: I needed a tool to talk to the spiritual part of people. The video art gave me the opportunity to share the feelings I felt, experimenting with new techniques in the telling, in the photography and in the lights. The 10 videos of this selection come from the need to tell a company that often turns into a big TV set with its dramas, its aberrations and its joys. I have many doubts about the ability of people to separate fiction from reality, the media from their common life. It is as if people lived elsewhere, convinced of being the center of a life that is not theirs. Their dreams are transformed into television schedules, meanwhile the same political language looks more and more like a script written for television. So it is increasingly difficult to distinguish between different levels of reality: one that we can live and one that exists only in our communication system. I do not have an adversarial relation with the instruments of communication but I am very critical about their use. I do not say that they are good or bad; I simply say that they should be observed so disenchanted, as without demonizing them as without consider them the source of truth. At the center of all there is always the human being and his ability to look critically at what is around him.
