2022 marks the 40th anniversary of the National Institute of the Arts (now Taipei National University of the Arts, TNUA), and The Event Is a School is a reminiscence of the 40-year history. Curated by the TNUA School of Fine Arts, the exhibition compiles the artworks and the theoretical discussions sparked in class by seventeen teachers and lecturers at the TNUA between 1982 and 1992, including CHU Teh I, LEE Kuang Yu, LEE Yih Hong, JUAN I Jong, LIN Pao Yao, LIN Chang Hu, CHANG Tzu Lung, CHANG Cheng Jen, CHANG Guang Bin, CHUANG Su O, CHEN Shu Ming, YEH Chu Sheng, DAWN Chen Ping, ZAO Bi, LAI Chi Man, LIU Shih Liang, TSAI Ken. The archives and interview clips of these events were also used to construct concrete pathways for the arts education at that time. The TNUA was founded at a time when the authoritarian regime has begun transitioning and the economy has taken off.

In the 1980s, the TNUA distinguished itself from other universities by initiating an independent enrollment process. It was getting out of the molding of medium education and becoming a cultivating ground of young artists. The school developed many integrated educational pathways in the pulses of the Taiwanese society and uncovered new dimensions of viewpoints in terms of teaching and creating arts into the 90s. The reminiscing of the history reflects the importance of the TNUA’s role in accelerating the transition of arts education in Taiwan. The artists from the TNUA had developed intertwined relationships between arts, culture, and society.

On the other hand, looking back at these events makes us realize that the arts education art at that time was at the same time inspired by the western modern educational ideas and shaped by the time and space of the 80-90s in Taiwan.

The exhibition project, “The students outside of the avant-garde: the views from the case of Drawing Show ‘85”, curated by GUO Jau Lan and HSIEH Mu Chi, recreates the teacher-student encounters during the Drawing Show ’85, and perform the show by holding an experimental drawing and art history workshop. The Drawing Show ‘85, which was held by the newly-established National Institute of the Arts (now known as NTUA) on the 4th of April, 1985, demonstrated mixed media artworks that went beyond the common imagination of the plaster sculptures at that time, and soon sparked a wide-spread discussion of “what is drawing?” The Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts intends to recreate and revisit the participatory process of this historical event of drawing. They collected drawing works from different projects dated around 1985 by four alumni:LIN Chun Chi, HOU Chun Ming, YUAN Goang Ming, TUNG Hsin Ru, and JENG Jun Dian, and interviewed them and others for their recount of the Drawing Show ’85. The exhibition is an attempt to teach students of today arts history and drawing through role-playing and to make drawing again the supplying source of more idealistic space and artistic freedom.
