American artist Mary Sherman's residency at the Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts begins the 11th of May and ends the 13th of July. Mary is the director of TransCultural Exchange in Boston. She has executed many international cross-culture projects, which now dot the world landscape, including "The Tile Project," here at the Kuandu Museum. Mary Sherman is fascinated with the physicality of paint – as opposed to its illusionary qualities. In her work, she explores the tension between painting's sensuality and the mechanical, hard-edged qualities of electronic technology and 3-dimensional form to create abstract works that push the definition of traditional painting into new directions. Each of her exhibitions becomes a conceptual springboard for a site-specific, often viewer activated work. Her works are created to respond to the historical, physical and/or psychological space in which they are experienced. Frequently, she works collaboratively – both to find the necessary expertise for her works and to continue to stimulate new ways of understanding and expanding upon the possibilities available to art. During her stay at KdMoFA Mary Sherman will lead TNUA students from numerous disciplines in a workshop entitled "Here, There and Everywhere." The workshop will conclude with an exhibition of the class' collaborative works, opening July 11th and running through August 31st.
