Boo Sze Yang graduated from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) in 1991; completed his Postgraduate Diploma in Fine Art at the University of Reading, UK in 1995 and received his Master in Arts Degree from Chelsea College of Art & Design, the University of the Arts London in 2005. Boo has held twelve solo exhibitions and represented Singapore in numerous group exhibitions in Australia, Japan, China, Korea, Philippines, Malaysia, UK and USA. He was recipient for the Asian Artist Fellowship Award 2010/2011 sponsored by Freeman Foundation for residency at the Vermont Studio Center in USA. In 2003, he was awarded the Juror’s Choice for the Philip Morris Singapore-ASEAN Art Award and the Platinum Award, UOB Painting of the Year competition in 2009. His works are in the collection of the Singapore Art Museum, the Singapore Istana Art Collection, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Singapore, United Overseas Bank, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and Yingu Art Mansion in Beijing. Boo’s paintings deals with unconventional subject matter; from mundane domestic objects, to images of car and airplane crash-scenes, to the glittering interiors of cathedrals and derelict interiors of shopping malls. A prolific painter, not bounded by any tradition or style, Boo treats banal objects, serene interiors or destructive scenes as though metaphors for the human condition. Interiors of cathedrals painted on one canvas compliment the interiors of a shopping mall on another, equating it as a new-age temple, a point of pilgrimage for the modern man and woman of today. Inspired by the mega architectural structures of shopping malls in Singapore, the Mall is an ongoing series of paintings depicting an unstable space on the verge of collapse and in ruins; a study of space as concept and space as symbol. These works, distinctive in their eclectic brushwork and a subdued palette with grey overtones, creates an ambiance of light and space, inviting contemplation.
