Noboru Tsubaki is an iconic contemporary artist in Japanese art scene, as well as an outstanding educator. He started his artistic career in the middle of the 1970’s, the time when Mono-ha was nearly ending. Since Tsubaki has a question towards the stylized method from Gutai and Mono-ha artists at the graduate school, he has raised an interest to integrate “primitive impulse or natural state of human beings” and “pop culture”. In 1989, Tsubaki had an exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art which was one of the first exhibitions to introduce Japanese pop culture. Tsubaki is now known as a Post- Mono-ha historical consultee, and as a director of the Shodoshima project at the Setouchi International Art Festival 2013, he demonstrates the functions of art as a problem solver, along with the ARTOTHÈQUE project which designs the structure of the domestic demand of contemporary art.
