Wong Chee Meng
2015.07.30~2015.08.31
Malaysia
Wong Chee Meng believes that art has a place in all our lives and it is all just a matter of recognising its presence. Paintings are composed of layers and tiered images, despite their deceptive flatness. Wong’ interests lie within the experimentation and discovery of different image-making techniques; through additive and subtractive transformations, weaving random subjects into imbricate creations. Artist finds that he gains inspiration from a myriad of sources such as along with different forms of existing urban art, comprising of photos, furniture, street art, dance, music, et al. Some of his works are composed of several visual surfaces through contemporary artistic execution to create the “remixed cultures” with the intention to explore and develop the possibilities. In his recent series, [F]ortune of Lives exhibition at Wei-Ling Gallery in Malaysia, the artist extends his research on Chinese values, beliefs and practices through contemporary stencil art and paper cutting, which are embedded with various auspicious elements and patterns. In addition, colours become one of his keys in his paintings. Those elements are derived from questioning about being a Chinese and seeing the world through the eyes of a Chinese Malaysian. Wong Chee Meng (b. 1975) lives and works in Kuala Lumpur. His works have been shown in the Czech Republic, Malaysia, Macau, Singapore, and South Korea.
