Akiko Utsumi was born in 1979, in Kobe, Japan. She completed her master's degree in the Intermedia Art at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2011, where she is currently pursing a Ph.D. Utsumi employs various media, such as video, photography, installation, and public art. Her work deals with several concepts such as "memory and trace", "visualization of invisibility", and "time and perception", which are derived from her close study on characteristics of moving images. In her work, she tries to reconstruct the characteristics of moving images by object and space by intricately interwinding these concepts. She will stay in Taiwan and work there as a “mare-bito(客人)” means customer, visitor or caller with enthusiasm. Artist exists as “mare-bito” at every moment. She’s very interested in Taiwan because of its deep and complicated common history with Japan.
