Canada
Tyler Russell is the Executive Director/Curator of Centre A: Vancouver International Centre for Contemporary Asian Art. Russell has worked in a curatorial capacity since 2001 and has since held positions at Seoul’s samuso: space for contemporary art, the Busan Biennale 2004 and the Yokohama Triennale 2005. He was the founder of the KoreaJapan Arts Camp in Nakatsue and curated multiple projects in a Korea-Japan context. At Centre A, in addition to a number of other projects, including a solo exhibition of Taiwanese indigenous artist Chang En Man, he has curated a series of exhibitions that deal with concerns of gentrification and cultural change in Vancouver’s Chinatown and the ever shrinking space for Cantonese language and culture. Working in post-war communities in the former Yugoslavia during the mid-1990s profoundly influenced his interest in the role of art in inter-communal and inter-cultural relations.
